This collaboration has been such a privilege and joy. You are an insanely talented composer whose music lifts my heart. Thank you for being so generous, fun, and wonderful to work with!

Stephen Brown-Fried, Theater Director & Executive Dean of the College of Performing Arts, The New School

What a tremendously wonderful experience. I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed performing your pieces…they are superb.

— Dusty Francis, Former Artistic Director & Principal Conductor, New York City Master Chorale

This poignant multimedia work [“7 Minutes from the Sun”] was brought to life by Julia’s intellectual design of both lyric and sound. In this project I enjoyed the way Julia was able to take abstract concepts and translate them into motifs in the music. I appreciated Julia’s dedication to cultivating a truly collaborative environment and also her willingness to dive into process; not just product. I felt as though every detail was taken into account to create a work that walked the fine line of being personal yet multidimensional. Working with Julia was inspiring, invigorating, and inviting. I will always look forward to collaborations with Julia Barry.

Johanna V. Hayes, Dancer & Choreographer

I am so happy we worked together because the music you gave me really blew my mind. You’ve done an amazing job. I am so grateful for your work and am immeasurably happy with the final product.

Ayza Akhtar, Film Director

Julia is a fantastic composer who writes soulful, beautiful and engaging music. Her musical strengths include melody, immediacy, emotional honesty, wide stylistic range, truthfulness, naturalness, idiomatic vocal writing, expressivity, humanity, and fun. I enjoyed hearing her theatrical work as a co-participant in the Composer – Librettist Studio at New Dramatists.

Joseph N. Rubinstein, Composer & Singer

Julia is an incredible singer and songwriter. Her elegant compositions tell stories of many aspects of life, loss, and love with flowing melodies and moving lyrics. She blends gospel, jazz, and choral styles…and she evokes certain profound and familiar emotions in each piece. Julia is a wonderful person to know, and truly a master of her craft.

Holland Albright, Composer

Julia is a fantastic musician and a wonderful friend. It’s hard to find talented people who are also incredibly nice in the competitive NYC artistic landscape; Julia is a special combination of the two, and I would highly recommend her for any musical project.

Matt Siffert, Songwriter & Musician

Julia is one of the warmest, most thoughtful people I know, and as if that weren’t enough, she excels at balancing creative thinking and professionalism and is an excellent collaborator.

Alec Galambos, Composer, Interactive Audio Designer, Conductor

“Have you seen a virtuoso piano player recently? How about a virtuoso pianist with the voice of an angel and the passion and fury of 10 mountain lions? Okay, maybe not that extreme, but Julia Barry is about as close as they come.”

Jeremy Berman, MyDailyTracks

If you haven’t heard Julia Barry live you are missing out. She has an exceptional voice and her skills on the keyboard impressed everyone, especially Casey from The Ambassadors.

Robert Berman, RethinkPopMusic

[Barry] sings from her soul. She can make a piano shiver-and-then-wail… Her…album…[is] a magnificent work of art and a glorious work of heart… FACT: If Julia Barry’s not on your radar yet, she will be soon.

Sacha Vais, Irked Magazine

New York City is where Julia Barry calls home, and the smooth sounds of her jazz should be heard from coast to coast. [Once, or Twice] is getting me totally hooked… it’s the strength of Julia’s voice that really pulls you through each song.  This record is the perfect vibe…whether it be staying in from the rain, or basking in the sun and relaxing on the patio. …Barry does a great job of story-telling, accompanied often by brilliant piano and an array of other instruments… If you are interested in jazz, then I strongly suggest listening to Once, or Twice as Julia does not short the listener on this one at all.  A gift from the ‘City That Never Sleeps’ to Island SoapBox, and now in spirit of green living, a re-gift to all you lovely people.

Adam Lee, Island Soapbox

With a great portion of blues & jazz, pianist and songwriter Julia Barry is our SoundClouder Of The Day. Hopefully you’re enjoying this as much as we are right now at SoundCloud HQ.

Dave Noel, SoundCloud

Her sound is soulful, jazzy and deep.

Paul Ruth, Independent Music Scene

Her talent for writing poetic and haunting lyrics [is] her calling card.

Christina Calloway, This is Real Music

A voice that shimmers like moonlight on rain-soaked streets.
Erin Trahan, The Independent

Once, Or Twice is a lush, rich record full of beautiful, haunting music, sung by a voice that’s all at once pure, flexible, and expressive. [Julia] draws the listener in with warm, deeply personal songcraft, but at the same time stays enigmatic, revealing something new upon each listen… Decades ago, Joni Mitchell made waves across the landscape of music with her haunting songcraft, and became an icon of the singer/songwriter genre. If there is any good in the world, Julia Barry will find the same success…she has certainly earned it.
