1. Vote for In Her Image
Nau Grant for Change

Nau's first annual Grant for Change will "support those who instigate lasting, positive change in their communities." This grant would allow me to work full-time on In Her Image outreach, content updating, and curriculum expansion.
The grant is based partly on a public vote, so
please click here to rate In Her Image with five stars!
2. '08 in a Nutshell
Irked Magazine
Last winter,
Irked Magazine put together a really wonderful article about my work. Multi-media galore,
this article can be found on the Irked Magazine website.
Workshops - National Girl Scout Leadership Institute, Turn Beauty Inside Out Leadership Summit, Camille Cosby "Say It Write!" Conference, Tuxedo Park Upper School

Scattered throughout the past year were self-esteem workshops at conferences and schools, most based in media literacy and one in creative writing. At the National Girl Scout Leadership Institute I facilitated five workshops for middle- and high-schoolers back to back. Whew!
Hear some of what the girls (and I) have to say about media and female confidence in this short video created by filmmakers at
Everyday Wonder and
Story Farm. I was also thrilled to literally give girls the mic at the Turn Beauty Inside Out Leadership Summit, where we explored identity and power.
Pictures from this 50+ girl event are here on Flickr.
*I'm
currently scheduling presentations and workshops at colleges, middle and high schools, conferences, and so on; please
get in touch with suggestions or contacts who might be interested.*
Music
Most of the songs written for In Her Image will be recorded on my next album...which is actually on hiatus at the moment, but I am
playing those and other new songs live, as I've been getting back to
gigging. For now my shows are mostly in New York City and other East Coast places like Boston and Philly - please
let me know if you want to find out about
upcoming gigs in your area, or feel free to
check out tracks and info on MySpace. I'd love to see you--and all your friends, relatives, pets, and neighbors--at shows!
3. New Partnerships
Respect Rx

Courtney Macavinta is the founder of
Respect Rx, an awesome organization that holds Respect Rallies/Retreats and trainings to promote self-respect and healthy relationships. ÊI'm thrilled to be teaming up with Courtney as a co-leader of Respect Rx events. We're currently booking for co-ed and ages middle-school+, so
if you or anyone you know might be interested in hosting a Rally or being trained to give one, please
get in touch! Check out
RespectRx.com to watch their beautiful promo video and find out more about the program.
NEDA

Susie Roman at the
National Eating Disorders Association has set her sights on making this year's National Eating Disorders Awareness Week (NEDAW) more far-reaching and successful than ever. Susie and I have been collaborating on our common goals of increasing self-esteem and eradicating eating disorders. NEDAW will take place in February - free packets and information on how to take part will be available from NEDA. My commitment to NEDAW '09 is to create some events that promote healthy body image and respect. So at the risk of repeating myself,
if you or anyone you know might be interested in hosting any sort of presentation, workshop, screening, rally, classroom series, or whatever-can-be-imagined-event, please
get in touch!
New Moon Girl Media
New Moon Girl Media provides girls 8-12 with a by-girls-for-girls magazine and online community. These spaces are ad-free, safe havens where girls can be themselves, explore, grow, and find true friendship. I'm very happy to now be their affiliate, and want to help spread the word about their wonderful products as much as possible; they are subscription-based and take no money from advertisers, so they really need everyoneÕs support.
Make sure all the girls you know are New Moon Girls!
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks for reading and as always, for the incredible work you do! Please keep me updated on your projects and aims, and come find me on
Facebook,
LinkedIn, and the
In Her Image blog.
Warm wishes,
Julia

Spring/Summer Update
July 7 '08
Hello there,
I hope you're finding some time to relax and do exciting things you love this summer!

It's been a while since the last In Her Image newsletter, and I'm glad to say there's lots to report. (And when I say lots, I mean lots - you really might want to get a cup of tea and sit down on your comfiest couch with your laptop because this newsletter is truly chock-full of reading ;)
1. What's been happening:
* SWAN Day
* "Feminism 3.0" Published
* National Conference for Media Reform
* Support and Join Online
2. Upcoming:
* Women and Media Podcasting Series
* Girls' Leadership Events
3. News from In Her Image friends:
* New Moon Girls launch; Partnership and Street Team Invite
* You're Amazing! Book for Girls
* RespectRx Incorporates and Starts Girls' Rallies
* National Suicide Prevention Lifeline Gallery
* Anti-Advertising Agency
1. What's Been Happening
SWAN Day
In March for Women's History Month, I took part in
SWAN (Support Women Artists Now Day) with a screening of "In Her Image" at Wheelock College in Boston. This was hopefully the very first SWAN day of many annual SWAN days to come, hosted by the awesome
Fund for Women Artists. The Fund helps women artists find each other as well as funding, and has some of the best info I've found! I highly recommend checking it out.
Feminism 3.0
Also in March, MediaRights
published my article, "Feminism 3.0: Moving Forward by Looking Back," and I was thrilled when it was
reprinted on AlterNet.org. I also discovered that my
"Outreach Journal" from last year was reprinted on DivineCaroline in May.
National Conference for Media Reform

I just returned from a trip in June to Minneapolis for the
National Conference for Media Reform. I met a lot of genuine, passionate people who are doing all kinds of great things to
improve the future of media. Many of them also stressed the importance of collaborative efforts and the fact that today's social technologies enable us to find strength in cooperation, ideas that particularly resonate with my beliefs and style of feminism (as apparent in my Feminism 3.0 article above ;). I especially enjoyed the panel on Women in Media moderated by
Jennifer Pozner of Women in Media & News and featuring women like
Anne Elizabeth Moore, author of Unmarketable: Brandalism, Copyfighting, Mocketing, and the Erosion of Integrity and
Shireen Mitchell of Digital Sisters.
Support and Join Online
I joined two groups online that are just starting, but
definitely worth noting and joining.
* First is a group called
Now Art which allows artists and artist-friendly people to donate funds to artists (like yours truly!) in a peer to peer way. Any spare change you want to throw toward In Her Image is greatly appreciated!
* The other is a beta site called
PulseWire which is an online community where women working for change can share resources/solutions and collaborate.
And if you haven't already, please feel free to:
*
friend me on Facebook
*
join the In Her Image Facebook group
*
find me on LinkedIn
* and check out the
In Her Image blog!
These are such a great ways to stay in touch and share outside of my legal-document-length enews ;)
NB: That reminds me - Please
add InHerImage@juliabarry.com to your address book/allowed senders list to ensure that my emails will get through to you. Emails with images are often caught by spam filters but, you know, enews are just more fun with images! so please make sure you can still receive my messages.
2. Upcoming
Women and Media Podcasting Series
I'm really psyched to be starting a podcasting series on women and media in conjunction with
MediaRights.org, set to launch in September.
If you or any woman you know wish to be interviewed and speak out with media-related views, please get in touch!
Girls' Leadership Events

I'm currently involved with
Mind on the Media's Turn Beauty Inside Out National Leadership Summit and the
National Girl Scout Leadership Institute and am looking forward to working with the girls! If you have
suggestions for any other events you think I should take part in, feel free to
give a shout anytime.
3. News from In Her Image Friends
New Moon Girls, Street Team, & Partnerships

My work at
New Moon Girl Media is still really exciting, and I hope you've become as big a fan as I am of the support and encouragement New Moon products offer girls.
* In September, we will launch New Moon Girls (the continuation of our long-standing magazine and new website for girls 8-12), and in the meantime have a really great community buzzing at the
interactive Ask a Girl space.
* I have been overseeing the
orb28 blog for teen girls as well as the brand spankin' new
Street Team which is open to absolutely anyone to join. Everyone's invited to
help spread the love for New Moon! Just
email me to get started.
* I am also helping to setup and deepen relationships with likeminded companies and organizations (for the third time Ð woohoo for collaboration!!).
If you would like to guest blog, share content, or work together in other ways, just let me know!
You're Amazing! Book for Girls

Claire Mysko of
5 Resolutions has released a
great new book for girls,
You're Amazing! A No-Pressure Guide to Being Your Best Self. Another fantastic resource for your work!
RespectRx Is Official and Rockin' Out!
Respect Rx the creation of the wonderful Courtney Macavinta, is now officially incorporated and has some awesome plans for
girl rallies and all sorts of empowering ideas. Check it out and get involved!
National Suicide Prevention Launches Lifeline Gallery

The smart and sassy feminist writer,
Jennifer Gandin Le is spreading the word about an
innovative new web technology for suicide support headed up by her husband, Chris Gandin Le:
the Lifeline Gallery. By telling stories through avatars, people affected by suicide in any way can speak out on websites and blogs. Make sure to blog about this and embed it in your pertinent sites!
Anti-Advertising Agency
With unparalleled humor and brilliance,
Anne Elizabeth Moore has begun the
Anti-Advertising Agency which features many projects and ways you can help to
counter the invasiveness of advertising in our lives. I particularly like the Foundation for Freedom Award, which is a grant given to advertising professionals so that they can quit their jobs and do something more rewarding and less socially damaging. Go Anne!
Well, congratulations on making it to the end of this packed enews! ;) I'd love to hear what you're up to as well, so feel free to drop a line anytime.
Until next time,
Julia

Winter Update
Feb. 6 '08
Hi everyone,
It's February, and that always excites me because I can feel spring coming! I'm starting to clean the cobwebs and get going early with this shiny new e-newsletter.
There are a
bunch of really exciting things coming up, some of which you might want to start getting involved in now!
1. SWAN Day (Support Women Artists Now
Day) As part of Women's History Month (which of course is March), The Fund for Women Artists is organizing SWAN Day: Support Women Artists Now Day. At
http://www.swanday.org, they are hosting a portal, database, and marketing hub for any women interested in getting together to add to this
international celebration and recognition of women artists.
I thought you might be interested or would know women artists who might be interested in participating, so feel free to spread the word! I will be part of a film
screening in Boston, MA, and would be happy to screen and/or sell CD's at any events you and anyone you know might be setting up! I really like the sense of community and near-instant empowerment this idea brings.
Even if each event may be small, the fact that women all over the world are organizing house parties, parades, screenings, art gallery openings, etc., is quite inspiring.
2. New Moon Girl Media's orb28.com Launch I am very excited to be part of the team creating
New Moon Girl Media's new online experience for girls 13-15+,
orb28. We plan a full launch of the site in the spring, and currently are hosting a
mini-site and
blog.
Please check out these sites,
sign up for e-newsletters and RSS feeds of the blog, spread the word, pre-order subscriptions for you or special girls in your life, and so on! Like New Moon Magazine, orb28 will have
*no ads*, giving girls a chance to openly share their voices with each other and the world. This spotlight on real girls also means that the whole project (and company!) is
subscription and donation based. Your support and word of mouth is so important to the future of girls, and I thank you for your involvement in advance!
3. Latest &
Greatest from the "In Her Image" project Things with "In Her Image" are going along as usual!
- Recent acquisitions include the Virginia Commonwealth University Library.
(Please let me know if a college/university, clinic, teen/women's center, or local library near you might like a copy for its programming or collections.)
- I am thrilled to say that an article of mine,
tentatively titled "Where Feminism Has Gone (Wrong)," will be featured on MediaRights.org as part of Women's History Month.
- ITV-San Diego will be screening "In Her Image" on their Educational Cable Channel, as
well as offering "In Her Image" Facilitator's Guide resources to teachers (Thanks, Heidi!). (If you or anyone you know is looking to screen a video for Women's History Month or general educational purposes, please
let me know, as this is an awesome way to spark awareness.)
I hope this email finds you happy, healthy, and involved in projects you're passionate about.
As always, I'd love to hear what you're up to if you have a minute.
Kindest regards,
Julia

Thanksgiving Update
Nov. 26 '08
Hi there,
Happy (belated) Thanksgiving! As this holiday came to a close last week I thought about the experiences, opportunities, and most importantly,
people that I am
grateful for in my life - and you sure deserve a personal
thank you! I want to express my gratitude for your suggestions, inspiration,
and support of "In Her Image" as well as the amazing work you do every day.
I hope things are going really well on your end! Life for me has been busy and colorful, as I spent last year in
London working toward my
Masters in Interactive Media at Goldsmiths College. I was very lucky to have truly talented and
kind classmates, and am now officially a media geek!
As for what I've been up to
lately... I wrote an article on global media images of women for the Girls
Scout's site studio2b.org, mused about the new Ty Girlz Dolls in my
first ever blog post, and most recently contributed an
"Outreach Journal" article on
MediaRights.org about the making and
sharing of "In Her Image" thus far.
I am also thrilled to be a new
Assistant Online Editor for
New Moon: The Magazine for Girls and Their Dreams! I'm sure you already know about and love New Moon but just in case - New Moon is a unique magazine that
publishes girl-created content with no advertisements, encouraging girls to feel confident and great about themselves while learning about all sorts of topics they are interested in. Being an ad-free magazine that
focuses on what girls (not marketers!) have to say, New Moon is entirely supported by readers. Should you want to give this magazine to special girls in your life (hint: makes a great holiday gift!), you would not
only make a girl very happy, but also help New Moon continue to thrive for generations of girls to come! You can
order subscriptions online or by calling 800 381
4743.
I would love to hear about what you're working on and where life is taking
you. I hope you had a yummy and relaxing Thanksgiving - you are
appreciated!!
Til next time,
Julia
